THE SPEAKERS OF CROYDON TOASTY REVIEW REPORT FOR MEETING 5 SEPTEMBER 2006
Hello dear fellow Toastmasters of The Speakers of Croydon. It gives me great pleasure to introduce the new magazine “Toasty Review” which will give a showcase of each meeting throughout the year. I will be Miss Toasty, (well it’s better than Miss Piggy!) in other words your past President Carol West and I would like to welcome to our club as co-editor of this review Jason Peck, who will be referred to as Cheese on Toast. (I hope that’s not in reference to any bad jokes).
Last week’s meeting began with our stand-in Sergeant at Arms David West. In 5 years this was the first time the President of Grosvenor SquareToastmasters had ever performed this role in any club and he did it with aplomb, introducing the President and collecting the slips for the awards.
Our elegant President Joan Jardine gave a dramatic opening last night and reminded members and guests that there were certain subjects which were taboo. For example, Joan explained that it is important to remember the Toastmaster code of ensuring certain subjects were not brought into speeches for example, Politics, Sex, Religion. We were also reminded that the emails and telephone numbers of club members were private between members and should not be used to promote members charity fundraising and businesses. This is a rule throughout Toastmasters clubs around the world.
Colin Austin as Toastmaster did an excellent job especially as there were so many people either late or absent. With his charm and rapport with the audience he made everyone feel welcome and he managed to get us through the evening without too much of a problem. When taking part in Table Topics Colin said he ‘liked the carpet in the new venue’ a short statement but, funny. His snappy warm-up invited each person present to talk about some sort of change they might have had during the day. He informed us that he had changed his pyjamas!
Here are some snippets from a few. Alan changed his hairstyle. Remi said that motherhood might send her to an early grave! Roman told us he was shy – (I don’t believe it). Francoise wished to change time. Nikky had been on a course but was now back with us. Jason said he was lacking energy (which was an understatement). Vishal changed his country. Patrick said he would purchase a bicycle. TOPICS - Remi Ladega produced an inspirational topic session regarding holidays with a twist in the tale. The topic session was humourous and invited members to tell us different things and how they would cut down on luggage in. Joan Jardine suggested we take what was needed for a holiday then leave third world country to save bringing the clothes back.. David Langworthy suggested we all go on holiday to Crewe as he didn’t believe terrorists would go there! Peter Robinson was really expressive and told us how people ‘played for time’. Nikky Ajayi suggested cutting the bottoms from her shorts also cutting the sleeves of her dresses to save weight.
TOPICS EVALUATOR - We were pleased to welcome a guest evaluator who had taken 2 hours to get to our club, Irene Rusike. Even though time wasn’t on her side on her journey she did a very professional job. It is not easy when you are a fairly new member of Toastmasters to guest evaluate in a strange venue. Well done Irene.
PREPARED SPEECHES
There were four prepared speeches: Vishal Pandya with his Ice Breaker. We learned that India has 18 official languages (the English find it hard enough to cope with one). Kola Olutimehin gave his nice and resonant No9 speech (great nearly at No 10). Alan Gayle also gave his No 9 speech titled Mind the Gap and he introduced us to his ex-girlfriend “The Queen of I’m gonna”, but she never did. And finally, Francoise Emery ACB# the last of her 5 speeches from the Story Telling Manual. All the speeches were enjoyed by the audience.
We were also lucky enough to have 2 Presidents from other clubs and our Area Grosvenor visiting Roman Klimzcek, David West from Grosvenor Square club and Patrick Moran, Broadgate Speakers.
The Grammarian for the evening was Carol West Timekeeper was Warwick Oliver (first time he had done the role – WELL DONE)
NEWS Special request from our President – If you cannot be at meeting and you have a role please let Peter or the Toastmaster know so we can re-arrange the programme.
If you wish to have an item included in the TOASTY REVIEW let us know. Should other members like to take a turn at writing this review we would be pleased. Remember it would help you as well as us.
