The president, David Langworthy introduced the toastmaster of the day, Don Grant, who welcomed all members and guest Vijay (I'm afraid I didn't catch his surname). Don introduced a slight variation on the usual warm-up by asking all members to stand, and only sit down after saying their few words.
Philip Freeman took on the role of both Grammarian and Ah Counter, presenting the word of the day as the adjective 'Vivacious' or its noun-form 'Vivacity'. Angela Shakespeare took her first turn as the timekeeper and managed to cope with the stopwatch buttons and light switches.
There were three prepared speeches.
Abbi Greene delivered the third speech in her Competent Communication (CC) manual, titled 'My Daily Commitment'. The purpose of this speech is to have a point and for the structure and presentation of the speech to reinforce the point. Abbi's topic was Love, and in particular the need to love and appreciate yourself.
Frank Thatcher was called upon at short notice to deliver a speech. His was also the third CC speech, titled 'The World and All its People'.
The third speech was by Sudanta Abeyakoon as the sixth speech in the Advanced Communication Silver manual, which involved his evaluator David Langworthy choosing one topic from a list -- in this case Sheffield -- and then Sudanta improvising a speech on the topic. He called his speech 'Sheffield, Then and Now', and contrasted his memories of living there twenty five years ago and a recent visit.
Vanessa Buck led the Table Topics session, and in a break from tradition she asked speakers to narrate a continuing story about an ideal holiday. Yvonne Morris talked about her excitement and getting up early to travel to the airport and the necessity of visiting the duty-free shop. Satyen Deepchand elaborated on the theme of booze, talking about different ways of getting 'relaxed' at the airport and on the flight. Don spoke about the flight and arrival in the Caribbean. Our guest Vijay described breakfast and a walk along the beach. Frank Thatcher spoke on holidays in general.
Frank Thatcher was voted Best Speaker, David Langworthy Best Evaluator, and Satyen Deepchand was voted Best Table Topic Speaker.
The meeting closed at 9:15pm
