The Speakers of Croydon Club delighted her members and guests with the first ever contests since her inception.
The evening had a different twist to the normal meeting: two contests took place, best evaluation and best speech. The two winners are going on to represent the club in the Area Contests this Sunday and then, we hope, through further regional rounds.
What a superb evening!! Our delightful Sergeant At Arms, Carol West, set the scene. John Tomsky serving as Contest Chairman guided us through the evening constantly feeding us on his never ending humour! The officials behind the scenes included Anne Rowe, Beatrice Nabulya, Colin Austin, Craig Mills, David Bridgeman and Thandi Haruperi.
Congratulations to all the members who were brave enough to participate in the contest BUT most importantly to our two winners:
David Gordon for best speech
Richie Dayo Johnson for best evaluation
The other participants for the evaluation contest were Joseph De Souza (3rd place), Godfrey Nurse, David West (2nd place) and
Ore Ogungbayi. They each gave their feedback for Kath Robertson's speech 'Whoever said Shakespeare was a classic', which was a great performance by Kath (from Kent Speakers Club) and a real challenge for the evaluators.
More entertainers for the evening appeared in the speech contest:
David Gordon: 'One'
David Langworthy: 'Two nuggets of wisdom, insight and self discovery'
Joseph De Souza (2nd place): 'Colours of My Life'
Martin Armstrong: 'You too can change your life'
Godfrey Nurse: 'Questions that change lives'
Nikki Ajayi (3rd place): 'To be or not to be'
Richie Dayo Johnson: 'Run for your life'
Dayo Olomu: 'Turn adversity into success'
The speech titles speak volumes, the actual performances were incredible with powerful messages and great lessons from each individual speaker.
It was an evening filled with passion and inspiration; 'Lessons of persistence & determination', 'of love, gratitude & forgiveness', 'Get out of the blaming culture', 'You can do it', 'fear can never go away for as long as I continue to grow'.
