Joan Jardine was the contest chair and she ensured the smooth running for the evening. We had the 'The Magnificient Seven' First speech was Vanessa Buck with 'Into each life some rain must fall' It was the title of a song. How much is falling on your as it is important to focus on what we want and remove the don't wants. Our second speaker was Neil Lockhart with 'A Life Changer'. He kept us in suspense as he talked about a new miracle drug and it is free. It can reduce blood pressure, supplement our vitamin intake and energise us. And we are going to get a lot of it this summer - hopefully - sun. Abbi Greene with her affectionate and warm smile told us about how our attitude can affect each other as she talked about 'P.S.R.' - Personal Social Responsibility. Next Frank Thatcher titled 'The Pursuit of Knowledge' told us it is important to keep busy, keep working, have an enquiring mind and train to be interesting. 'Tell the truth quickly' - What would you have expected with a title like this? Philip Freeman our chartered accountant discussed the curtesy code in place in one practice he worked for and I believe may have been the reason that lead him to join Toastmasters! The penultimate was Don Grant with 'Standing Room only'. He told us about his staff appraisal and how he was not pleased with the outcome. We have to stand up for what we believe in and challenges are there to show us who we are. Finally from the Magnificent Seven was David Langworthy. We had a journey from chicken coops to cruises to pokey bedsits. It doesn't matter where we are but our attitude is what is more important than materialism. His words of wisdom was 'treat your mind as a treasure chest'. Which of these Seven would be representing the club at the next stage of the contest? There were all Magnificient and it is unfortunate that there is only one winner. The runner up was Neil Lockhart and the winner was David. Langworthy. Erickson B. Mooneapillay was our speaker for the evaluation contest. His story telling, wit, agility, jacket shedding kept us all in suspense. Names identify people, places and things. Names evolve with time, they are important and they help us to know who we are. So his title 'What's in a name' allowed us to know what the middle initial of Erickson's name stood for. (You will never guess?) So Erickson has the feedback from 5 evaluators. There were David Langworthy, Philip Freeman, Frank Thatcher, Deirdre Hynes and Vanessa Buck. The runner up was Vanessa Buck and the winner was David Langworthy. Thank you to all who contributed to the smooth running of the contests, from Sergeant-in-arms, time keepers, judges and the tea maker! Deirdre Hyes
