THE SPEAKERS OF CROYDON
TOASTY REVIEW
REPORT FOR MEETING 19 SEPTEMBER 2006

Hello dear fellow Toastmasters of The Speakers of Croydon. Here we go again with the “Toasty Review”, which is coming out slightly later than anticipated. Your past President Carol West or Miss Piggy, I mean, Miss Toasty and her esteemed husband David disappeared off on holiday to the United States so she left me, Jason Peck, holding the pen and paper for this review.

Our last meeting began with our elegant President Joan Jardine using a candle and mirror analogy. A mirror so we can reflect on things in life and a candle which provides a leading light. We should all try to find a balance, but unfortunately we are not always able to hide how we feel.

We were also given a gentle reminder about our fees, which have unfortunately gone up due to our change in venue. They are now £54 every six months. We were also reminded
of the forthcoming Area Level Humorous and Table Topics contests which take place at the Ripley Arts Centre in Bromley on the 14th October.

VP of Education, Peter Robinson as Toastmaster and VP did an excellent job especially as there were so many people either late or absent. He explained that Gregory Edwards had agreed to step in “last minute.com” with a speech as someone was unable to attend. Peter had recently attended a workshop and asked us all what makes us happy. Everyone in attendance gave their off-the-cuff responses.

Filling the roles of Timekeeper and grammarian we had Grant Stanley and Remi Ladega respectively. Both stepped up to the plate and gave an explanation of their roles; with the word of the day being “fabulous”.

TABLE TOPICS – Jason Peck produced by far the greatest table topics the world of Toastmasters has ever seen! (except for an even better one he did at the Grosvenor Square club). Whilst you may not be in agreement with the above statement, it is Jason who is writing the review on his own this week. His subject was Top Five Lists and was inspired by an event that occurred in his temporary job. Akbar moved from being financially rich to being rich of soul, Gregory told us why he wanted to be famous, Remi gave reasons why she should be taken on a date (I agreed but she still turned me down) and our guest Martin was left with the unenviable task of giving reasons to be P.M. without getting political. All did brilliantly well.

PREPARED SPEECHES

Remi gave her number 3 speech providing advice on taking care of your heart. She gave us 5 steps for health in this area: reduce stress, reduce fat, reduce drinking, reduce smoking and have a healthy diet.

Gregory delivered a 7 and a half speech, so not exactly “by the book”, but entertaining nonetheless. With the title “friends, Romans, everyone he gave us an overview of the history of the Roman Empire leading up to Queen Victoria. (For those of you who don’t know she was a monarch before she became a pub in “Eastenders”).

Sudanta delivering his ACB #4 speech about the incorrigible cadet reminded us not to bite the hand that feeds us, or indeed the other hand.

Peter delivered an Award Ceremony Speech (ACB #1) for Jamie Oliver (who unfortunately couldn’t make it as he didn’t know he was being honoured). I think it was safe to say that Peter delivered an exceptional and rousing speech.

EVALUATORS

Sudanta evaluated Remi and provided her with some good suggestions for further improvement.

Peter evaluated Sudanta and praised his vocal variety and complimented his play on words.

Joan evaluated Gregory and gave him one or two good tips on his improvised speech.

Joan also evaluated Peter praising his use of topicality with his subject matter.

Our Grammarian pointed out the phrases she liked, “zooming back forward (Gregory), High Spirited (Peter) Wholesome food, but boring (Sudanta).

In terms of Awards Akbar won Best Table Topics and Joan won Best Evaluator.

NEWS

Congratulations to Will Linsdell for winning the Humorous Speech Contest and to Jason Peck for winning the Table Topics Contest. Both now go forward to the Area Level.

Special request from our President – If you cannot be at meeting and you have a role please let Peter or the Toastmaster know so we can re-arrange the programme.

Also as a reminder Toastmasters is a supportive club with positive feedback that uses a commend, recommend and commend. This needs to be highlighted as there was some heckling during the Humorous Speech Contest. The President wishes to remind everybody that even though the speeches were humorous it does not make Toastmasters a comedy club that allows audience members to take pot-shots at speakers.

I should also like to point out that Remi picked up on a typing error in the last “Toasty Review” as she quite rightly spotted that the date read August and not September as it should have done. Unfortunately there is no prize-giving involved.

If you wish to have an item included in the TOASTY REVIEW let us know.
Should other members like to take a turn at writing this review we would be pleased. Remember it would help you as well as us.

We would also like to encourage members to invite friends, relatives, or any work colleagues to come along and experience the benefits of Toastmasters.

Until next time!
