1 June 2004
Charmingly Thandi Haruperi set the scene in her role as Sergeant at Arms for the fist time, introducing the president “a man who needs no introduction”.

Introducing the toastmaster for the evening Carol West, the President opened the evening with the powerful echo of our purpose “An evening not of mistakes, but lessons that are repeated until learned.”

Carol West guided us through the evening with grace, assisted by David West and Shegun as time keeper, and grammarian respectively, introducing the word of the day: “SANGFROID” which means, freedom from agitation or excitement of mind; coolness in trying circumstances.

The main speechcrafters for the evening were:

Munuwar Malik warmed us up with his icebreaker speech. Congratulations and welcome to Toastmasters.

Ore Ogungbai challenged us to define ourselves with her no 5 speech “Who Are You”

Collin Austin outlined the recipe for getting lucky with his no 3 speech “Good Luck”

Finally John Tomsky gave us some incredible tips in his witty educational speech on how to evaluate.

The table topics session with a tantalising theme “Holidays” was led by Alex Ward. Performances from new guests and visitors were incredible. Well-done to everybody especially those who braved the stage for the first time, “taking the bull by the horns”.

A special thank you to the team of evaluators for their inspiration; David Langworthy, Godfrey Nurse, Beatrice Nabulya, Dayo Olomu, Craig Mills and lastly to our general evaluator, a Distinguished Toastmaster and our club sponsor, Brian Sewel. As summarised by our president in closure “Here we teach to let the butterflies out in formation… Join the club of those who were once afraid and are still afraid”

All in all a good start to the month of June that leads us to the end of the Toastmaster year. Leading the club into another prosperous year is a new committee taking office from July 1st 2004. Hopefully this will be “a winning team that will take us to the world cup finals and transform the club and members alike into the greatness for which they are destined”
