 | | | | Feel free to contact us with any questions, suggestions or feedback. | | | | | | | 6 October 2009 | | | | It has been some time since a meeting report was done but hopefully there won't be a long lapse as previously. The Toastmaster for the evening was Abbi Greene who is also our VPE. Abbi's motto is ' a day without a smile is like a day without sunshine' so tonight there was much sunshine. We had a number of guests and there were all welcomed by name. One of the guests is now a new member so welcome to Cathy Clarkson and also to Emmanuel Asafo-Asyei who recently joined. Sarah Mulumba doing her Icebreaker started by recalling her childhood in Uganda. She is the 8th of 10 children and was always willing to help and run errands for her family. Her running prowess was similiar she said 'to run like a cheetah'. With this skill and her intellect she was sponsored to continue her education and later had the opportunity to travel to the UK. She is now learning another skill of speaking in public! When we come to a certain age and are unable to continue with the pace of our current sport would we think of 'Walking on Water'? Deirdre Hynes # 7 wanted us to ponder on the joys of water skiing and that a wonderful sensation of feeling the air in your hair and gliding over the waters. Cattle grazing requires 5 times more land than growing vegetables. When we go shopping think about what you buy, what you are going to consume and how much of the food and packaging you will throw away. Neil Lockhart #7 said that 40% of food bought in this country is thrown away. Each year 100,000 sq miles of trees are being demolished, 30 million water bottles are being discarded and not recycled...... there was a lot more... definitely 'Food for Thought'. Don Grant doing his ACB#3 told us about many of 'One of those moments'. There were many, from falling off bicycles to being bruised in certain areas to hospital visits. You go to your appointment on time but never seen on time. But all is well now and that all clear was 'one of those moments'. It was wonderful to see Frank Thatcher again after his absence. He was in great form as Table Topics Master. His theme was Winter. His first question was to David Longley to tell us about Snow and he recalled his skiing in Austria. Cold Weather and Pauline Hardy told us how she detests it and the many ways she goes to, to keep herself warm. Samuel Komolafe does not have Blizzards and snow storms in his country but here in the UK you need your car wipers to keep the vision clear. Emmanuel Asafo-Asyei who has just joined told us about Ice and its many uses such as skiing and sculptures. Yetunde Komolafe related a driving collision which was caused by the ice and snow. Cathy Clarkson another new member, how she spends New Year's Day in the pub sobering on the delights of a huge breakfast. Her advice is to take another day off work after New Year's day to fully recover from the effects of celebrations. The evaluators were Sheryl Estrada, David Longley, Philip Freeman and Sudanta Abeyakoon respectively. A first must go to Sheryl. She has not yet given her icebreaker but she gave informative and observant feedback to Sarah. David Longley told us that appearance goes for 15% of the marks in a contest. Philip Freeman that Neil had definitely grasped the objective of this speech with his much research. Sudanta stating that Don had the SAGACITY to hold his audience with his jokes. Aki Akiwumi was using his accounting skills as he counted many Ah,Oh, fillers, uncertainies and adding a new word. What 'sagacious' toastmasters we all are!! To finish the meeting and to make us laugh and smile the role of Joke Master was the President Sudanta Abeyakoon. What do you want to be when you grow up? We are not going to India and Japan but will help little Sally get her man!!!! A great opportunity to develop ones comedy skills so please share some funny jokes during these 2 minutes, or longer, if need be.
The next meeting is on Tuesday 20th October 2009 and it will be special. The theme is fun, dressing up in Holloween and looking ridiculous, loads of speeches, nibbles and drinks such as fremented grapes. If this is your first time to Toastmaster or this club come along you never know what you will learn or who you will meet? Deirdre Hynes
