REPORT FOR SPEAKERS OF CROYDON
MEETING DATE TUESDAY 20TH APRIL
This meeting was somewhat depleted ; there were only about a dozen members in evidence! However, it was the usual, enjoyably vocal evening.
Owing to a slight calendar error by David Langworthy, his educational speech did not take place (this will, now, be this week). However, we had a brilliant, partly ad- lib, speech by Neil Lockhart. Neil miscalculated the length of his CC10 speech and, thinking it was to be 5 to 7 minutes , had to find another 3 minutes to fill the time. He did this brilliantly, with no waffling, ahs or umms. Had he not panicked for a nano- second and apologised before embarking on his “award- winning” 10th speech he may have won outright. As it was, Deirdre, with her CC9 was just as entertaining and was awarded joint 1st place, along with Neil.
In the absence of any other speakers there was an extended Table Topics session, run by the club president, Sudanta. This was great fun as it was in the form of a debate. There were 5 topics; each speaker had to expound for one to one and a half minutes for, or against, the motion. Cathy became quite upset at the thought that people would hate her for speaking against the idea of free carers for the disabled. Poor Cathy; don’t worry, we do still like you! The Best table Topics speaker was newcomer, Adrian; hopefully, he will come again and, maybe, join!
These debating topics led Abbi to suggest that we should have more debating in the club; good idea. Having to speak about a topic which goes against ones opinion would certainly help to improve Speaking Skills.
The evening still managed to fill so much time that it was not called to a close until 9.40pm. Hopefully, a good time was had by all those attending.
